Child Care volunteer
La Colectiva de Mujeres holds (almost) weekly general membership meetings to discuss key issues that affect the immigrant worker community and hold trainings for women to be eligible for work through our housecleaning program. Its important for our members to be able to attend these meetings to participate in discussions about workers and immigrant rights and to participate in job trainings, and to be able to do so without their children present so that they can focus all of their energy on the meeting. Because of this, its so helpful to us when volunteers are able to assist with childcare! We have a toy and book cabinet for the kids to use during meetings. Number of children ranges from 4-10, and if there are a lot of children two people will do childcare.

Requirements:

Interest working with children. Past babysitting/childcare work a plus, but not required. Many of the children speak Spanish as a first language, but mono-lingual English volunteers are also encouraged to apply.

Time Commitment:

Wednesdays 5-7pm AND/OR two Thursdays a month 5:30-7pm.

Meet some of our wonderful volunteers!/Conozca nuestros voluntarios!

carlosCarlos Martinez recently served in Venezuela as the program director for Global Exchange, where he coordinated dozens of delegations to Venezuela. Before returning to live in San Francisco from Venezuela, Carlos co-authored "Venezuela Speaks! Voices from the Grassroots," a collection of interviews with members of Venezuela's grassroots social movements. Carlos is now the coordinator at the Center for Political Education, an organization committed to movement-building by providing activists and organizers a space for dialogue and developing theory and ideas. Carlos volunteers teaching English classes to day laborers every week.

volunteer 2Kim Rohrbach has lived in San Francisco for over 20 years and in the Mission for nearly as long. She really enjoys teaching the ESL class on Mondays at 10:30 because she relishes the interactions with her students - they have diverse backgrounds and experiences, and they keep her on her toes. She also works as a counselor at the Tenents’ Union and a as paralegal. Previous occupations include working as a bike messenger, census taker, copy clerk, waitress, barista, and cheese monger. She picked up some Spanish while working in the hospitality industry—thanks to tutoring from Spanish-speaking co-workers. Kim lives with her 18-year old cat, Babaganooj.

volunteer 2Rachel Fields has been volunteering with the Day Labor Program since June 2010; she helps in the office with intakes, resource references, websites, The Periodiquito, and spends a good amount of time in impromptu-chalkboard-drawing-games+ESL classes, chess matches, and listening to jornaleros’ stories.  She plans to pursue a Masters in Social Work sometime in the near future.
In her free time she dances Tango.
